I often see how my American friends keep reminding me that there are 2 topics one should avoid to bring into a discussion: One is politics, and the other one is religion.

I suppose the 3rd one would be so-called Paranormal experiences. And that's because those have some to do with politics --people with such experiences tend to show a strong antagonism toward the government-- and A LOT to do with religion.

To have a sighting of a ghost, a flying saucer or even a giant hairy ape is to have a mystical experience, whether you're aware of it or not.

So I don't know if there will come a day when people begin to talk more openly about their fringe experiences. Frankly, it might be easier to discuss your favorite sexual positions at the dinner table during Thanksgiving :P

rpj, I agree with you. It is a sort of unspoken taboo, to talk about "paranormal" experiences, and that includes UFO sightings. Religion is a no-no as well, but, at the same time, if someone says something like "After church last Sunday, we went to the park" you don't say "You go to Church??!! How can you be so stupid?" People just nod and smile. But if you say anything related to paranormal topics, people think nothing of being rude.

No doubt!
